Rio Arade

Going up the Arade River from Portimão to Silves is an experience that enriches senses and knowledge.

Benagil Cave Tours

Boat Trip Along
RIO ARADE

The Portimão River, or Arade, is formed by the confluence with the Silves River, next to the small island of Rosário, the Bóina and Odelouca streams, which descend from the Monchique mountains. You must go up at the beginning of the flood and go down at the beginning of the ebb ”.

In fact, until the beginning of the 20th century, the Arade River was the “highway” from Portimão to Silves. With no other type of communication, the river kept Silves in contact with the sea and the port of Portimão while it was of economic importance. In the 11th and 12th centuries, when Silves, in its heyday, was the “Bagdad of the West”, Arade was a must-see. The barges went up to the city gates loaded with goods for the bazaars.
